Previously the word imperialism had been used to describe to what was perceived as Napoleon III's attempts of obtaining political support through foreign military interventions. It first became common with its current sense in Great Britain, during the 1870s and was used with a negative connotation. The word imperialism originated from the Latin word imperium, which means supreme power. However, both are examples of imperialism. The term can be applied to the colonization of the Americas between the 16th and 19th centuries, as opposed to New Imperialism, which describes the expansion of Western Powers and Japan during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
